Perfumery or the art of perfumes making started in Egypt. Fragrance was used during religious functions at that time. Egyptians used to burn incense - the fragrant sticks made with aromatic herbs, gum and spices. So there used to be lot of smoke and perhaps that is the reason they used to call it ‘per fumum’.
Though the connection between fragrance and flower is easy to invent, ancient men did not use flowers to prepare perfume. Aromatic herbs and spices like almond, coriander, myrtle, conifer resin, bergamot etc. were used in perfume making. It’s still a question whether ancient perfumes had any other purposes apart from spreading smell and creating the holistic ambience for worshipping. It is still unknown if ancient men were aware of aromatherapy and pheromones.
